Serena Williams: 2009 Wimbledon singles champion
July 4, 2009

Venus and Serena pose with singles trophiesWhile it was Independence Day in the United States, Venus and Serena Williams took to the court at the All England Club, competing against one another for the fourth time in their careers for the Wimbledon singles title. It was a rematch of last year's Wimbledon final, though with a different result; this time it was Serena Williams who emerged the victor over older sister (and five- time Wimbledon singles champion) Venus. Serena won the title 7:6(3), 6:2, making this her third Wimbledon singles title, and gives her now an impressive total of 11 slam singles titles in total.

Following their singles match, Venus and Serena took to the court again to compete in the ladies doubles final, in which they defeated #3 seeds Samantha Stosur and Renaee Stubbs in straight sets - 7:6(4), 6:4. They defeated the #1 doubles team in the semifinals 6:1, 6:2 in route to the finals. Together Venus and Serena now have won four Wimbledon doubles titles, and a total of nine doubles slam titles, winning at least one title at each of the four grand slams.

Overall, the entire fortnight of tennis has been a treat to watch. Both Venus and Serena have played exceptional tennis, both in singles and doubles, since round one. Although Venus was not the victor today, she, herself should be applauded. Holding five Wimbledon titles, she ties Billie Jean King in open-era Wimbledon titles, and holds less than only two women: Martina Navratilova (9) and Steffi Graf (7). With Serena now holding three titles, the sisters, together, have now obtained eight of the last ten Wimbledon's played since 2000. Also by winning today's singles title, Serena Williams now holds three of the last four grand slam singles titles (U.S. Open, 2008; Australian Open, 2009; Wimbledon, 2009). For those who were unable to view matches from this year's Wimbledon, they are now available in our website store. Congratulations to the sisters, once again, for an incredible two weeks of Wimbledon.
