Serena during the Fed Cup tie against Ukraine. It was a long way from home, but Serena Williams clinched the fed cup tie over Ukraine today, defeating Lesia Tsurenko 6:3, 6:2 on Sunday.  Serena's victory gave Team USA a 3-0, insurmountable victory over Ukraine, which ensures that USA will return to the World Group in next year's Fed Cup.  Team USA also won the final singles and doubles rubbers, to earn a clean-sweep, 5-0 victory.

This was Serena's first trip to an oversears Fed Cup tie in over a decade.  With Fed Cup as a requirement, Serena's participation secures her position on the Olympic Team in London.

Venus Williams already has played enough Fed Cup ties for the olympics, but what she needs is an improved ranking.  Venus needs to improve her ranking to around 52 (currently 70) in order to qualify.

Both Serena and Venus are both next set to compete in Madrid, Spain, a premier red clay event, which begins on May 5.  Both sisters are also scheduled to compete in Rome, another premier red clay event, on May 14.
